When did Remington introduce the 12g Sportsman model, and what features other than the engravings did it have from a non-Sportsman mode. Others have wild-life engraved receivers (Sportsman model, I assume) which may or may not have "Model 11" engraved on the bolt. Remington 700, 870 or 1100 serial/barrel. They can be decoded to find out when your shotgun or rifle was manufactured. I've seen pics in GunBroker of plain guns (with cross-bolt safety) that have non-engraved receiver and bolt. Check the serial numbers located on the left side of the barrel on your Remington shotgun. However, I've seen examples of these later model cross-bolt 11's with other featrures that aren't clear in the historical photo.
